Princess Madeleine 101

Time for another royal lady 101! Staying in the Swedish royal family; this time, it’s Princess Madeleine’s turn.

Princess Madeleine’s Bio

Madeleine Thérèse Amelie Josephine, Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, was born on  June 10, 1982. She is the youngest child of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

In accordance with the 1979 Act of Succession, Princess Madeleine is currently sixth in the line of succession, following Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Prince Carl Philip and Prince Alexander.

Princess Madeleine has been studying at the University of Stockholm since spring 2003. She has completed courses in Art History (60 credits), Ethnology (40 credits) and History (20 credits), as well as an introductory course in law (10 credits). Princess Madeleine completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Stockholm University in January 2006.  In autumn 2006, the Princess returned to the University of Stockholm to pursue postgraduate studies in Organisation and Leadership, in order to extend her knowledge of international humanitarian work. Personal Life

Before meeting -and eventually marrying- her husband, Chris O’Neill, Princess Madeleine was engaged to lawyer Jonas Bergström. Jonas and Princess Madeleine met through mutual friends back in 2002 and they dated for seven years. Jonas proposed to Madeleine on the island of Capri early June 2009 and the engagement was made official on August 11th 2009.Rumors that Jonas was unfaithful started to spread and their wedding was postponed. In April of 2010, the court released a statement announcing their break up.

Shortly after the breakup Madeleine fled the country. She moved to New York to work for Childhood, an organization co-founded by Queen Silvia. There, she met Chris O’Neill. In February 2012, they moved in together and a few months later, he attended the christening of Crown Princess Victoria’s daughter Estelle.

The engagement between Princess Madeleine and Mr Christopher O’Neill was announced Thursday October 25, 2012. The wedding took place on June 8, 2013, in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

On February 20, 2014, the couple’s first child, Princess Leonore, was born in New York. The christening took place on Sunday, June 8, 2014 in Drottningholm Palace Chapel. On June 15, 2015, Prince Nicolas was born.

Fun Facts

In her first TV interview alongside her husband, Princess Madeleine said of herself:

“My poor parents always got a headache when we were having family photos or something like that,” Madeleine said. “I always ran away. I was always hiding – they always had to drag me there. I was screaming. I never really wanted to be part of it.”

Similar to Zara Phillips, Madeleine is a talented equestrian and has competed in many competitions under the name of “Anna Svensson”. She is also an active user of Facebook, which she uses to promote her charities. Her page currently has 916.000 likes. The Princess is fluent in German, English and French,
